Education

Leah A. Rosenberg received her Ph.D. from Emory University’s Graduate Institute of Liberal Arts American Studies Program in 2011. She holds an an M.A. in Medical Sociology from the University of California, Irvine and a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her dissertation, “Mourning News: Grief, Memory, and Television Viewership of 9/11,” explores in detail how a small group of seventeen participants ritually viewed the news on September 11 and in the week immediately following the attack. Her areas of interest include audience interpretation and meaning making strategies in relation to television viewing with an emphasis on the construction of collective and individual memory. In particular, she focuses on how over time audiences make sense of and reinterpret media representations of such historically significant American tragedies as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Columbine shootings, and the September 11 attack.
