Undergraduate Degrees: Major

studyingCollege of Arts and Science Requirements:

  • minimum 120 hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0
    Up to 40 Religious Studies hours may count toward the total 120.
  • minimum 30 hours numbered 3000 and above
  • For more information about College of Arts and Science requirements and General Education requirements, please see A Guide for the Major (pdf).

Minimum Department Requirements:

  • 30 hours from Religious Studies (at least 21 hours numbered 2000 or above)
  • At least one course must be taken in each of the following three fields; also, you must have at least one course in Asian, one in Western, and one in Indigenous religions.
    • History
    • Religious Narratives
    • Society
    Double major students need to file a Graduation Plan in both departments. See below for Forms.

The major in religious studies requires the following

  • Rel St 1100: Introduction to Religion (3) OR Rel St 2100: Major World Religions (3)
  • Rel St 3990: Junior Seminar
  • Rel St 4100: Modern Perspectives in the Study of Religion (3)
  • Rel St 4990: Seminar for Senior Majors (3)

Students must earn a grade of C or higher in order to have the credit applied to their majors. Students are encouraged to pursue dual majors that combine religion with other interests.
